As an Aboriginal activist, Oodgeroo Noonuccal's achievements listed below made her eligible for the Indigenous Heroes Awards:
Besides being an Aboriginal activist, Oodgeroo received many awards for her writing, such as:
Oodgeroo Noonuccal received three honorary doctorates from Universities in Australia, in appreciation of her lifetime commitment to Indigenous people. This was also in recognition of her literary talent in Australian Literature. The awards conferred on her are as follows:
The QUT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Support Unit was renamed The Oodgeroo Noonuccal Unit in 2006, in appreciation of her great contribution to Australian History.

- An achievement that received national prominence was her appointment as Queensland's State Secretary Of the Council for the advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
- A Noonuccal-Nughie Education and Cultural Centre was established where projects were conducted for school students and visitors
- She stood for the 1969 Queensland state election as a candidate for the Labour Party in the electorate of Greensloops
- In 1970, hoping it would advance the Aboriginal cause, she stood as a member of the order of the British Empire (civil) for services to the community (MBE). As a result of injustices perpetrated against the Indigenous population, she returned the honour in 1987 in protest.

- International Acting Award and Fellowship of the Australian Writers Award.
- Mary Gilmore Medal (1970)
- Jessie Litchfield Award (1975)
- International Acting Award
- Fellowship of Australian Writers' Award
- Member of the Order of the British Empire
